sala4D was commissioned in March 2022 to prepare the Yass Mainstreet Masterplan including photomontages, prioritised schedule of works and cost estimates to guide the upgrade and management of the main street over the next ten years.
Working with the Yass Project Advisory Committee and community to develop the vision, ‘To transform the Main Street to be a place where locals love to be and where visitors wish to stay - where the history and beauty of Yass are shared with pride,’ our community lead design process including workshops, presentations and pop-up events, resulted in a deep understanding of the values held by the community.
The big idea was to create a shared path which provides a loop around the main street connecting Yass Riverside Park, Chinaman’s Creek, the Railway Museum, historic laneways and the heritage railway line with rail trail opportunities.
Collaboration with Transport for NSW to trial Yass main street as a 30km/hr slow street was another key project element. Grant opportunities such as ‘Streets as Shared Spaces’ are critical to delivering this project and testing the design to ensure lessons learnt can be integrated in the mainstreet revitalisation roll-out.
The plans were placed on public exhibition in August 2022 and are being finalised for adoption.
