The Post Office Lane pedestrian plaza is a critical link in the heart of Orange, NSW; used by most people coming to the CBD. Over the years Orange City Council has sought solutions to make the space more attractive and enjoyable to be in, while balancing concerns about anti-social behaviour.
Key to understanding the potential of the space is the knowledge that increasing usage by a diverse cross-section of society is the best way to manage potential anti-social activities. Therefore, the lane needed to become a space that is visually appealing and a comfortable choice for anyone. New seating, decluttering and bright, fun artwork were all part of on-going proposals approved by Council.
The final stage in the plan has been a commission from the Orange City Centre to put the theory into practice as part of their renovation. The plan includes an outdoor eating area spilling into the lane, combined with the decluttering, new furniture and planting, and art.
