The brief from Orange Pre-school was to update their existing play equipment to provide the children with a more natural, nonprescriptive, accessible and multi-layered play environment.
The opportunity to create a outdoor room for flexible play and teaching which maximised the northern sun provided inspiration. The space was designed to include: a play tree; maze with talk tubes; mobile structure for hanging art work and vertical music elements; a cocoon swing hung from the existing tree; raised vegetable beds; totem poles; and mobile hutch for the resident rabbits.
sala4D was re-engaged in 2018 to prepare a Front Garden Masterplan, which improved circulation around the path for bikes and games. It also promoted the concept of wild play, utilising the perimeter garden beds and existing trees. A deck was installed to extend the classroom and provide an outdoor learning area.
