sala4D was commissioned to prepare a concept design followed by detail design/ tender documentation, for Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council and Variety - The Children’s Charity. A new inclusive playspace, the space will be a place for everyone, of all ages and abilities to have fun and enjoy their time experiencing “The Magic in the Trees”.
The concept design for the playspace was based on community consultation conducted by Variety, combined with a detailed understanding of the site. The concept speaks to a long-term vision that will be realised over stages, as funding becomes available.
The focus of the playground is on nature and water play; that adventure and imaginative play are important; that play which provides a progression of risk taking and equipment for all abilities is valued; and, that the space needs upgraded toilets, signage, pathways and BBQ facilities to make it possible for users to stay longer.
The design concept for the playspace is ‘The Magic in the Trees’, with key features of Stage 1 being: a ramped fort up into the biggest pine tree so those in wheelchairs can get up high and look over everyone; a netted structure and bridge across to the fort for climbing, challenging and hanging out; nature play within a forest setting, including build-your-own bush shelters, balance logs, ropes and boulders; rolling and crawling over hills and through tunnels; an accessible water and sand table, connected to a large sand-pit with accessible digging equipment.
Stage 1 was completed in 2022 with further stages to follow.
