Located on the northern beaches of Sydney ‘The Village’ at Balgowlah comprises an area of approximately 20,000m2 and is a mixed use development consisting of retail, commercial and residential apartments. The landscape has been designed to create a series of public spaces that are engaging, usable and have a sense of anticipation about something ‘new and different’ being just around the corner.
The planting design utilises a finer grain of massing to create more intimate spaces from native, low water consumptive species combined with culturally familiar plants often used in a domestic setting. Residents feel comfortable and familiar within what is still a very contemporary garden.
Furniture elements have been designed into the landscape to be in keeping with the design of the whole space, rather than being bought from a catalogue, so they have a perfect, seam-less fit. Concrete walls double as seats and bench seats in the plaza have been specifically designed to feel like they are islands that have drifted away from the mainland.
Working closely with AJC Architects and art consultants The Village ensured that the public art was incorporated as an essential ingredient of the landscape. The rich planting palette unifies the project as one contiguous development, resulting in many awards.
