sala4D project managed the construction of Stage One on behalf of Cootamundra - Gundagai Regional Council. Working in closely with the play contractors Play Workshop and Variety / Touched by Olivia, innovative design solutions were achieved to increase accessibility and inclusive play. Such items were the slide to the fort which offered wheelchair transfer at the top and bottom of the slide; and fully accessible water and sand play.
Council was very keen to think outside the box with regard to nature play opportunities, with a variety of bespoke locally sourced timber and boulder play elements throughout the park. Creatively integrated within the landscape a wonderful diversity of play has been created.
A suite of directional signage and communication boards was also created to assist wayfinding and accessibility for all. Using AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication Symbols/ Aided Communication Symbols) throughout the site to provide communication aids at the key areas of play.
The planting design offered a variety of natural play values by: reinforcing the passive play areas through swishy-swashy grasses; standardised trees and pines to populate the space, making them look like people; and additional tree planting to reinforce the existing botanical diversity and provide additional shade to the picnic area.
